IPS Predictions – Week 10

November 3, 2009

Second good week for the IPS in a row, going 29-21 against the spread. That raises the total for the year to 222-198 (53%). Maybe, it now has enough data (and teams are playing more consistently) that we can expect the IPS to continue to do well down the stretch.

Kind of a ho-hum week for college football. Not many big match ups. Bama should take care of LSU, tOSU and Penn St are fighting for second place in the Big 10 (at least until tOSU beats Iowa), and OU-Neb fighting to salvage some respectability.

One things for sure. The Horns will crush UCF, may even get the first shut-out of the season.

IPS Predictions – Week 8

October 21, 2009

Well, the IPS predicted that the UT-OU game would be much closer than some of the pundits suggested. People focusing on the Sooner’s offensive struggles weren’t giving their defense enough credit. Just glad to get out of there with a victory against the country’s most Impact-ful defense. Otherwise, the IPS had a lackluster week, going 25-27 against the spread.

Pretty busy this week, so I’ll have to keep it short. Here are the IPS predictions for the week.

IPS Predictions – Week 7

October 12, 2009

Alright, it’s the big week at least for us Longhorn fans. Keep in mind that I may be personally biased, but it doesn’t affect the IPS predictions. Also, I’ve gotten some questions about my ‘write-up.’ Just to be clear, they are just my own-takes on the games and not an indication of a greater certainty on the part of the IPS.

UT 27, OU 23  – Texas scores 47.2 PPG, ut that the Horns average 18.5 more points than our opponents normally give up. So, we likely to score 18.5 more than what OU is giving up (8.4), that’s 27 points. Conversely, OU’s defense is holding opponents to -20.2 less than the normally average, so we should expect to only score 27 points. Either way you look at it, UT is likely to score 27.  On the other side of the scoreboard, OU is averaging 35 PPG (10.6 more than their opponents average). Since the Horns are giving up 15 PPG, the Sooners will likely score 25.6. But our defense is holding opponents to -14.4 of their average, so we can expect to hold them to 20.6 Take the average, and the Sooners will likely score 23.

Mizzou 26, OSU 30 – Should be a good game. HF is the MOV.

Tech 19, Neb 35 – Blackshirts are getting it done.

USC 23, ND 18 – Domers have been living a charmed life. But, USC’s defense is good enough to get it done.

VT 37, GT 26 – Hokies better on both sides of the ball.

Cal 19, UCLA 22 – Wrong team favored outright. Cal’s got the better offense. UCLA’s got the better defense. UCLA should win at home.

Cincy 26, So Fla 24 – Should be a great ball game. At home, Bulls will give Nati all that they want, but Bearcats pull out a close one.

IPS Statistics – Week 7

October 12, 2009

Well, the IPS went 21-21 this week against the spread. Makes you wonder why I bother, when you could have done just as well flipping a coin. But, as I’ve said before, it’s damn hard to predict what 18-21 year old kids are gonna do any given weekend. If it is any consolation, the IPS went 30-11 after loading in the ‘new’ data from the weekend’s game. If the IPS had only know then, what it know now.

IPS Predictions – Week 6

October 6, 2009

Well, the IPS struggled to a 21-23 record ATS in Week 5, leaving it 119-106 for the season. Keep in mind that it had only 4 data points per team (actually 3 for some) and many of those games were against non-BCS and FCS opponents that can wreak havoc with statistical averages. As the season improves, hopefully the predictions will as well. Of course, Vegas lines improve as well. This week more than half dozen lines are too close too call (less than .5 difference between IPS and Vegas)

Horns 51, Buffs 9 – The IPS agrees with the commonly held opinion that the Horns will pummel the Buffs. The Horns offense is scoring 20 more points than their opponents average and CU is already giving up 28 a game. Meanwhile, the UT is holding opponents to 14 less than their average and CU is averaging only 25.

Florida 32, LSU 13 – Those looking for a Gator upset aren’t likely to see it. Without Tebow, Florida may not score 32, but their defense which is holding opponent to 14 less than there average is good enough to keep LSU that is only scoring 27 in the teens. As long as Brantley doesn’t implode with turnovers, Florida wins.

Bama 24, Miss 23 – Don’t be surprised if Mississippi gives Bama a run for their money. Bama is a better team, but Ole Miss ain’t bad. Their IPS factors at +7.5 and -8.9 respectively. At home, Snead and company will keep it close.

Auburn 42, Ark 34 – Chizik’s bunch will provide more competition for the Pigs than the Aggies did.

Baylor 18, Sooners 35 – Battle of the back-up QBs. Predictions of OU’s demise are a bit exaggerated. Think about it – they’ve lost two away games by 1 point each to top 25 teams. IPS still has Baylor covering, but I wouldn’t bet against the Sooners.

Georgia 20, Tennessee 31 – Tennessee not getting enough credit. They aren’t even favored at home?

Neb 29, Mizzou 18 – The Huskers are another team that ain’t getting enough love. That loss at VT (a game that they had all but won) is looking pretty good. Meanwhile Mizzou is undefeated, but played no one.

OSU 32, Aggies 32 – Despite the reality check at Jerry’s World, Aggies are good enough to hang with OSU at home. Couldn’t find a line on this game – probably due to the uncertainty of key OSU players.

TCu 22, AF 23 – Another BCS busters bubble bursts – say that 10 times real fast. Frogs may be a little overrated and AF a little underappreciated. AF may not win, but expect they’ll cover the 10.5.

Houston 35, Mississippi St 41 – Cougar hangover might cost them a second game on the road.
